The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

5.0

I saw this book in a little bookstore and the title shone at me from the shelf. I got my ticket ready and jumped on the hype train. From the first chapter I knew I wouldn't regret it. It reels you in by talking to you as a reader and I'm a sucker for fourth wall breaks.

Percy is a likeable character and even though things have not been easy for him having been abandoned by his father and forced to live with his mother and smelly Gabe, he still manages to be kind to his mother and befriend the somewhat geeky kid at school.

I feel like the Greek mythology is very cleverly woven into the storyline, though I feel like he's tried to cram maybe too much into a single novel but I think he just about gets away with it. If your reading this as an adult you have to excuse the very teenage things they do and say, however, I don't think the writing style should put you off as I feel it's fairly universal.

When I wasn't reading Percy Jackson, I was thinking about it quite a lot and that's always the biggest sign to me I should continue with a series. I'll look forward to the next one in a few books time!
