The Core by Peter V. Brett
2.0
This was so bad. About twice as long as it needs to be with new, tangential characters and storylines introduced – in the final part of a five parter?! Who cares! Get back to the main story!
The whole thing was just messy, with cheesy dialogue, two dimensional characters, silly martial arts self-indulgences, and a totally predictable resolution. There was far too much of stuff like noble choices winning out, glorious martyred self-sacrifice and simplistic, black and white morality in this book and not enough smart dialogue, nuanced characters. Oh, and too much hacking and slaying (where the outcome is never in doubt). It’s stuff like this that gives fantasy a bad name.
It’s a shame because the first two books were pretty good, and I’ve given two stars in acknowledgement of them being good enough to keep me reading to the end of this – and also because some of the writing is fairly good. But overall - meh
