The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

3.0

The Hate U Give details sixteen year old Starr Carter’s experience with police brutality after her friend, Khalil gets shot by a police officer. As anger rises in her neighborhood community, Starr has to decide whether she wants to come forward with and tell her first hand experience, while also trying to balance her life and friends in her white suburban private school.

Author, Angie Thomas, is also a woman of color who grew up in a low income, predominantly black neighborhood, so this story comes from an insider perspective. There are many details throughout the story that show it’s a culturally specific novel, such as the vivid descriptions of the neighborhood and mannerisms of Starr’s close family relationships. While the many pop culture references took away from the immersion in the story, these cultural details pull the reader back in.

I would recommend this book to teens who like to read, as they may be more suited the handle the fast pace of the story and the code switching used throughout.
