The Wolf Princess
by Cathryn Constable
Not quite a fairytale, this one. A young girl, an orphan, goes off to Russia on a school trip and finds that not all in her life is as it seems...
I generally prefer realistic fiction to fantasy, but in some ways I wish the fantasy element had been ramped up here. There's an air of Anastasia to the story, and was never quite sure if Constable was intentionally playing up the comparison or intentionally moving away from it. The Big Reveal is pretty obvious, and I really would have liked to see it come a bit earlier (and see Sophie figure out what it really means for her life), but it's a cute story.
Side note: I rather love the tunic on the cover. Wondering if I could make one...
