Educated by Tara Westover

I was drawn to this book everyday after I put it down even though I was disappointed at every read. I think I kept hoping that it would end revealing some epiphany that the author had - that her family was physically and mentally abusive, how this impacted her astronomically low sense of self worth and lack of critical thinking about organized religion. Then, I was hoping, she would triumph, through some seriously honest and objective therapy to advocate against bias against class, race, and gender. At the end, I was not convinced. I seriously can't believe those foot notes and caveats. Even in HER OWN STORY she felt the need to qualify her memories and include countering testimony of her abusive/abused family members. Wow - guess goes to prove that being "educated" doesn't mean being smart or self assured. I still get the impression that she hasn't shaken her families manipulative hold on her life. This wasn't necessarily her story, but her family's story from her perspective. I valued the history of childhood, but after BYU I wish there was more about her education experiences at BYU, Cambridge and Harvard. Perhaps if she feels that counseling is not against her religious beliefs, she will partake and then write a sequel.
