The quaint small-town nostalgia I was expecting from this book turned out to be a brittle shell concealing something much darker and more substantial. I was completely hooked by the end of the two-page prologue, and can’t believe this small, perfect novel isn’t more widely known. It’s now shelved, in my imaginary library, alongside So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away by Richard Brautigan and Denis Johnson’s Train Dreams.
