this book made me ask one question and one question alone: why do lesbians have such terrible taste in music?
i picked this one up since i've never read a romcom and it turns out i do not enjoy the rom nor the com. this was an easy read, in that the writing is accessible, but that's about all i have good to say about it. actually, i enjoyed the pnw setting and i miss the pnw dearly. onto the bad: i'm not a fan of instant love-- the practical part of me overrides the romantic, and i just kept thinking about how they fundamentally do not know each other. how is this relationship going to work out in a few months? what if they do not get along at all? what about when they move in together? so many questions.
the mc was extremely annoying (though i understand she was relatable), and i have to speak my truth. the butch was not butching. the butch was a femme in butch clothes. which is fine! but i need authors to not be scared of butch women. i was also annoyed by the amount of name-dropped songs in this. just put the playlist on one page and go. i don't need to know you're listening to ariana grande, taylor swift, michael buble, the pussycat dolls, carly rae jepsen, dolly parton, wham, etc, etc. these two gripes being in the same paragraph is relevant, surprisingly, because i found it bizarre that the author would have the two main characters discussing their love for... taylor swift(?) on the same page they discuss how important and not dirty the word butch is. gave my head a spin.
the mc did nothing wrong and i'm pretty sure if she had come clean to the love interest it all would have been fine. therefore, the 3rd act drama was petty, contrived, and unnecessary. the love interest was willing to be a homewrecker to her brother's fiancee without knowing the truth which should have been a huge red flag for the mc!
overall, this book commits not 1 but 2 literary sins: the mis/noncommunication trope, and... well, it's boring!
