The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

[[later edit: after rereading and listening to the audiobook, I love this book more than ever and it gets better every time I come back to it. Especially now that I love these characters and writing so throughly.]]

Original four star review:
In the beginning this was a solid 3star book. Then it started haunting me. Whenever I was away from it I could only count down the hours until I was with it again. Which is funny in a way because I don't think I'm a fan of the writing style here. With it I was bothered, without it I was deprived.

For the writing, I picked up on a lot of the quirks of the author and it drove me crazy. A word does not have to be repeated three times in a row for it to be important. You don't have to describe something in multiple ways all at once, I got it the first time around. I had a sense that these elements were suppose to be poetic? But...maybe just not to me. I asked someone else who read it and they didn't even notice these things.

The plot is interesting, I love the mystery and paranormal happenings centered around the hunt for treasure. I think this is my favorite theme in the story since I haven't fallen for any of the kids just yet. I like them and you can't stop me from not calling them "my boys" (+Blue) but at the same time I'm not over the moon for them.

However, I really need to say that when this book is good, it's great. And that's in the moments of action and emotion. The last quarter of the book is just that and that's why I bumped up the stars.

ALSO, there are some parts to the writing that make me laugh. Not so much because it's a joke but more because it's a relatable thing that you'd experience in your own group of friends. It's hard to explain why but sounds came out of my mouth while reading and that deserves it's own star.

Really looking forward to what the rest of the series has in store.
