Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott
2.0

Just to let you know off the bat, I did enjoy this book, but I had some issues with it that might differ from popular opinion. So just be warned before reading my review. I won't bash it or rant or anything though.

This book is sold as Hunger Games meets Amazing Race meets Pokemon. And as a whole, that is pretty accurate. While the premise is not quite HG-oriented, something about the writing and atmosphere that it gave off reminded me A LOT of Hunger Games. Like, a lot. Which was fine, I suppose, since I love HG, but it got a little annoying because I just felt like it was too similar. Especially the ending! Oh my goodness, that ending was like this world's equivalent of the HG ending, in my opinion.

Tessa is an annoying person, BUT I think she is great as a narrator. She is girly: prim, proper, into fashion, and hates the outdoors. Yet she is on a race through jungle, desert, ocean, and mountains for three months! So obviously she pointed out her dislike of her surroundings and how she wished she could be getting a manicure or hair done, etc. It was funny, and it was a bit over the top at the beginning but that made her transformation as a character even stronger by the end. I actually kind of liked her by the end of the book.

The Pandoras were cool, but lacked development in my opinion.

Also, if you didn't know (like I didn't, going into this book), Fire & Flood is just the first book in a series (duology, trilogoy, longer? I'm not sure). Which, if I'm honest, would have probably kept me from reading it if I had known. It was just okay enough to enjoy it for a standalone, but unless the second book gets rave reviews whenever it comes out, I don't see myself reading on in the series.

Overall 3/5 stars, and I feel like I could give it 2.5 if there were half stars. Some might like it, some might not. I wasn't the biggest fan.
