One Last Stop
by Casey McQuiston
This book has so much heart, but I think it's not really for me. Maybe it’s because I'm from New York, but even though a genuine thread of romance wove its way through the story, a lot of scenes that should have been magical felt corny and bizarre to me. Like the impromptu Run-DMC subway dance party: it just personally reminded me of a time when a guy really tried it on the F train—it was so eerie; it was almost the exact same scenario—he had a 70's punk vibe, leather jacket, cassette player blasting Jackson 5, everything. No one was feeling it then, and I almost felt embarrassed reading it happen in fiction. I understand that's just me, though. Maybe other readers can relax and suspend their disbelief.
Nonetheless, I think McQuiston has a real talent for swooning, lyrical writing and striking metaphors. Sometimes it read as overindulgent, like a descriptive writing exercise that reiterates the same impressions over and over in a million different ways, but overall, it was a pleasure to see so many wistful passages in a story that could have been cut-and-dried in other hands.
