The Adventure of the Copper Beeches by Arthur Conan Doyle

3.0

I read this in my (restarted) Holmes read, but I had it on my list for having a connection to the Brontes and it does indeed have some similarities to [b:Jane Eyre|10210|Jane Eyre|Charlotte Brontë|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1557343311l/10210._SY75_.jpg|2977639] with a governess working in a house where there’s a mystery and closed off rooms; even the description of the dog felt similar, except the dog in Jane Eyre is not dangerous.

I found it one of the more interesting Holmes stories in my recent reading (I’m going chronologically through the cases per this rather than by publication) and yet I didn’t see that Holmes actually solved much. Of course he deduced some of the circumstances from the governess’s narration, but then it didn’t seem to require much deduction, and then later more was learned from the other female servant after the fact. Watson and Holmes came to “the rescue” at the end with a mini chase and yet everything seemed to happen just before their actions.
Also interesting was Holmes showing a little more interest in and respect for the young female client, and saying something like “a sister of mine would never go to this job”. But when Watson hoped Holmes held some interest in the young lady, all interest vanished when the case was over.
