Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession
by Alice Bolin
I was worried I wouldn't enjoy this book after reading some reviews here on Goodreads that said it was "all about moving to LA" or "all about Joan Didion," which are both untrue -- although Bolin addresses her move to LA and two or three times revisits the same location in a different essay (I recognized a couple of apartments a couple of times). But the book held up to its promise and the reason I bought it, in that it offered an insightful take on a young woman moving from a somewhat oddball but fairly privileged family in Idaho to Nebraska, Montana, and yes, Los Angeles, and taking on troubled depictions of women that surround her as she moves to her belated/late-blooming adulthood in the course of those moves, with lots of literary analysis from the books that fed her thinking (yes, including Didion).
