I don't think anything I write can properly convey my true feelings while reading this book. The writing is simple, yet vivid and harrowing. It paints the lives of those affected from the Gwangju uprising, from the very moments up to 20 years later, while also encompassing the different effects of this event such as grief, betrayal, censorship, class, and more. I tend to enjoy reading books all at once, but the message of each of these stories and perspectives are best felt when you take the time to stop and reflect.
I think this is more of a personal issue because it's not used very often in most of what I read, but the use of second person could be disorienting and hard to read at times. The perspective changes through each chapter, so it didn't affect my reading experience too much.
