Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

2.0

Kept me interested but boy was I confused. Last sentence I audibly said “HUH?”.

Couldn’t keep straight who was who.. Clare is the friend with the fucked up parents and kills the parents, then adopts her friend Taylor aka Amber’s family as her own. Then apparently Taylor/amber’s parents end up favoring Clare her whole life. Madeline is Amber/Taylor’s boss but also her aunt who got the house when her parents died.

I was frustrated to no end reading this, constantly wanting to shake some sense into the main character. She never told her husband wtf was going on and I feel like she never got any answers.

“Clare wrote the diaries (Amber’s maiden name was Taylor). Jo was imaginary. Madeline was Clare’s godmother. The last diary entry after Clare killed her parents in the fire was “Taylor made me do it” so we don’t know which one was crazy. Edward was stalking her and kept her in the coma, but Clare had been driving the car when Amber was hurt. She crashed it to end Amber’s pregnancy to keep being the most important person in her life. Amber’s husband read Clare’s diaries, so Amber thought Clare would try to kill him to protect her secret. To protect her husband, Amber set fire to Clare’s house while Amber was watching her kids.

Amber and Paul got custody of Clare’s kids, so the reader assumes she died, but at the very end of the book their childhood bracelet is left in Amber’s hotel room, implying Clare is still alive and watching her.”
