The Butterfly Garden
by Dot Hutchison
It seemed like a slapstick ending. The occurrences too radical, the coincidences too neat. It ended the story with a little bubble of not unanswered questions, but rather with answers that had no place to be there.
The rest of the story was captivating. Told from the perspective of one of the captive girls, you learn how they got to the interview room with FBI agents. But, Maya proved to be too good of an narrator, easily filling in all the blanks with her wit and charm, and seemingly not affected in the slightest by what happened because she was a "teddy bear collecting dust, not a broken soldier without a leg" kind of child. She was forgotten, not lost, and somehow that gave her mind the capabilities to deal with rape, torture, captivity, and a twisted mother hen like role in a Garden that despite all it's beauty was a disgusting place.
I know that doesn't sound captivating at all, but I did finish this book in a day. I really did enjoy the premise of the story. It is a genre that I normally wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole because it feels "too real" and I want to escape when I read (which says a lot about me), but this book surprised me.
Besides the aforementioned, I do recommend this book, and give it a stellar four stars. It's a nice read when you're travelling, or, like me, have nothing better to do with your day and need to fill it with a new world.
