ohhhh how I ATE THIS UP IN IT'S ENTIRETY!!! I had put it down because I was in the middle of a couple of other books but when I got back into the story, I literally couldn't put it down. I finished over 300 pages in two days... and although I'm not too slow of a reader, I am a mom, etc so it usually takes a week or so to finish a longer book...but not this one! The entire story captivated me and never let me go. I can't remember a single part of the story lacking or losing me due to pace.
Yes, this is Romantasy, but it's also a story of weakness and humanity, and what it means to be physically vulnerable and emotionally vulnerable as a human and how difficult it is to do either.
and the romance? the slowwww burn between Queen Oraya and King Raihn?! COME ON NOW. I am not even ashamed to admit how much I loved Twilight growing up, and even to this day, the nostalgia makes it impossible to not watch the movies whenever they come on... and I feel like in a way this is a grownup version of Twilight, so I of course, absolutely devoured it. I have SO MANY books on my TBR but I'm not sure I can wait too long before I have to read the next in the series... especially with THAT ENDING!!!! My mouth DROPPED. I can't wait to find out the answers we didn't get in this book.
I really enjoyed Carissa's writing so I may start on her Daughter of No Worlds series next just so I can keep dodging reality in her spectacular fantasies! I'm not sure if she reads these reviews but I can't be the only one who is BEGGING her to go back to the indie covers for Daughters of No Worlds... they were so good. I can't imagine the new ones being any better.
ANYWAYS.... 6 star read for me. I absolutely loved it. I hope the next books in the series captivate me as much as this one! I highly recommend anyone who loves vampires and fantasy to read this beautiful story of what it means to be a human, to be loved, and to give back love. You won't be disappointed.
** There IS open door spice, but it's only a couple pages, most of the triggers have to do with blood and lots of murder and violence.
