Road To Fire
by Maria Luis
**spoilers ahead** While I enjoyed this book, I felt like there was something missing. Our FMC, Isla Quinn, killed the king in an act of revenge. Her parents were secretly working with the anti-loyalist group and were killed at a riot. Because of this, 5 years later Isla shoots the king (from a distance, mind you) and somehow miraculously gets away with it. Our story starts only 2 months after she kills the king and she has somehow not only not been caught, but we're led to believe that the manhunt for the killer is over. I'm sorry - the KING was MURDERED and the Met/police has given up only 2 months later?! Seems highly unlikely.
Then Isla decides that she wants to work underground with the anti-loyalists because she wants to be surrounded by like-minded people. This seems like a really flimsy plot point in order to introduce her to Saxon. Since the story is told in first person POV, we hear her inner monologue on how much she wants to be surrounded by people who also hate the crown, but it seemed just very two dimensional. She's tasked with delivering messages from a priest-turned-informant to Saxon and on her literal first day she decides to go undercover to flush out more information based on what the priest told her. This leads to her being attacked and, of course, Saxon saving the day. They finally cave to their mutual attraction and sleep together while on the run from the police.
The story continues and it's eventually brought to light that the Priest brothers are actually loyalists to the crown. Saxon is so loyal to the crown that he imprisons Isla when she admits to killing the king (not knowing he was a loyalist yet). Isla feels betrayed and refuses to eat or drink for the duration of her stay in the dungeon. A few days later, Saxon has a change of heart and helps her escape and takes on the consequences of choosing her over the crown- exile.
This leads to a little more action and angst as Isla mends her broken heart. After things go downhill for Saxon, Isla rushes back and makes a deal with Holyrood for his release from prison and a clean slate from all his accused crimes. This plot point was another that seemed very flimsy. Isla gave Holyrood the photos that incriminated Jack for the murder that Saxon took the fall for and Holyrood bailed him out of jail. This was in exchange for Isla signing a contract to Holyrood to become an agent? And Guy, Saxon's older brother and leader of Holyrood, who had previously told Saxon that he was persona non grata and would be killed if he came back, just bails him out of jail and allows him to "take over Isla's contract" ... what? It didn't make much sense to me. They got their HEA but I'm just so confused as to why certain allowances were made.
The chemistry and tension between our MCs were palpable and the Saxon's emotional growth was my favorite part of this story. The plot wasn't that great and I found myself just annoyed with Isla and how irrational she seemed to be most of the time. We'll see if I continue the series...
