A Refiner's Fire by Donna Leon
5.0
It was time for some light reading, and this was a good choice. It is one of Leon's best for several reasons. More space was given the mystery itself. While I enjoy the family scenes, there are times they feel like filler to an otherwise slim plot. Not so this time. Second, Guido didn't whine about tourists all the time. That had gotten tiresome so I appreciated its absence. The plot was quite different from others I remember, and quite engrossing. I miss Guido working with Vianello, but I am enjoying Claudia Griffoni. And she has a prominent place in this one.
As always there are moral and social issues in the background. This one had the issues of gangs and an incident in the Iraq war, a moment in the past, a massacre at Nasiriyah, that had relevance to the fictional present.
