A Series of Unfortunate Events Box: The Complete Wreck by Lemony Snicket

4.0

Wow, what an adventure! I've been listening to the whole series since September and I finally finished in December, haha! I found A Series of Unfortunate Events a very enjoyable, hilarious, and dark children's series. I adored listening to it because Tim Curry does the voices and sounds to absolute perfection. I found myself cracking up so much while listening because of his takes on the characters.

The first six books are very formulaic -- the Baudelaire children go to a new random family friend's house, Count Olaf shows up in disguise, no one believes them when they say it's him, and the children have to find a way to prove it and to get out of his clutches -- but that didn't stop me from immensely enjoying them and seeing how the children would get out of these crazy scenarios. But I liked the last seven books even more because the books weren't as predictable and the Baudelaire children were on the run from Count Olaf and his henchmen. I never knew what was going to happen next and I loved it!

I like how Violet, Klaus, and Sunny grew as children and people during the course of the series. We see them grow up right before our eyes during the several months (not including the epilogue) in which these books take place. I especially loved how Sunny came to be her own person and developed a knack for cooking and over the course of the books she uses less "baby talk" and more real words.

I'm not going to lie though, the last book was a bit of a disappointment to me. I thought them being stranded on an island with Count Olaf and the people of the island was fascinating because there was a whole separate culture on this island, but I thought we were going to get more answers than we did. There was that whole "there are no ends in life" thing, which is the excuse for not giving more details because the story of the Baudelaire's will still go on, but it just annoyed me. I want more answers! Who actually killed the Baudelaire's parents if it wasn't Count Olaf like he hinted at in the end?! What does VFD actually do? *sigh*

Overall, I thought it was a wonderful and thought-provoking series that people of any age can enjoy.
