I want to start off by saying, Backman’s writing style for this book is one of my favorites of all time. I’m not sure if all of his books are this way, but the voice and tone of his writing is so refreshing and feels so real. I usually am 50/50 on third person pov, but it fits this book so incredibly well.

This book was so relatable; it follows a group of people from all different backgrounds as they are trapped at an apartment viewing by a bank robber who had no intention of actually taking them hostage. Although they are all very different, the one thing they all have in common are they are just anxious individuals. Each character is so unique but so equally relatable.

It was so cool how Backman revealed details, little bits at a time but not in a way where you are totally lost without  certain details. The way he chose when to reveal the names of certain characters, and certain details about their life was perfect. This was a wonderfully crafted novel- so refreshing.

“Because everyone loves someone, and anyone who loves someone has had those desperate nights where we lie awake trying to figure out how we can afford to carry on being human beings. Sometimes that makes us do things that seem ridiculous in hindsight, but which felt like the only way out at the time.”
