Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

4.0

This is one of the first horror books I've ever read. I wanted to try branching out for Spooky Season, and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the creepy atmosphere and the plot. I had a little trouble engaging with the characters, though. I did not like Noemi all that much, felt she was under-developed, and thought she made some silly choices. Then again, if everyone behaved reasonably in a horror book/film, there'd hardly be any story. I guess I'd like to see a story where the bad guys/force of evil couldn't be so easily thwarted by rational behavior. I enjoyed the parallels between English imperialism and certain parts of the story I don't want to give away, also the more subtle/insidious violence against women that gets overlooked. Good book, overall.
