Dolly Parton, Songteller by Dolly Parton

I've been reading this book a little bit at a time, and my admiration for Dolly Parton continues to grow.

When I was growing up, Dolly was mainly a joke. I mean, they call the bridge outside Memphis the Dolly Parton bridge. I do remember doing aerobics to "9 to 5." I really, really remember the immense popularity of "Islands in the Stream," but when I listened to country stations--and I tried to avoid them--they rarely played her songs.

I, like most of my generation, knew Dolly best for her role in Steel Magnolias. And later, when I got to college, for Dollywood.

Discovering more about Dolly has been a joy. To see how she's handled her business all while being an utter genius songwriter just gives me some hope for my native state of Tennessee. She has so quietly--and sometimes loudly--taken care of so many people through her gift that she is an inspiration.

Even better, I really relate to her ability to see the divine in those things and those people others deny. I respect her ability to pour herself into songs. It's simply a joy to share a home state with her, even if I am from the other side, and she is my inspiration to try to do well by others.
