A truly moving novel, it describes the horrors of war in the most detailed but also appropriate way. The characters all have own character traits, and end up becoming almost numb to emotional pain after being on the front for years, having seen the worst and cruelest of things humans are capable of. It was definitely hard to get through some passages because of the brutality of the described events, even if it is a well written novel. You learn many new things about war and it also makes you feel even more like war is the most unnecessary and awful thing possible, that's decided by a few powerful men that results in thousands of deaths of innocent people.
