The Light We Lost
by Jill Santopolo
read if you like:
❤️ romance
⭐️ star-crossed soulmates
⏱️ love stories across decades
summary:
I decided to re read this in preparation for the sequel (!!) and I’m so glad I did. As a quick refresher, it follows the lives of Lucy and Gabe, two college students whose paths intertwine on September 11. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of significant historical events of the 1990’s and early 2000’s and takes the reader through heartbreak, tragedy and sacrifice.
The book is written through a series of flashbacks from Lucy’s perspective as she talks to Gabe, which is a unique approach to storytelling that makes you feel a part of their relationship. She also speaks directly to him about their times together, and poses questions to him about whether the choices they made were the right ones and how the various moments in time together shaped their future. This book delves deep into the complexity of human relationships, and the concept of how our hopes, dreams and passions can fit in with others. It compares several relationships throughout the story — obviously Lucy and Gabe, but Lucy and Darren, Lucy and her friends, and others, to expose what makes two people “work”, and the feelings that drive that attraction.
This book is raw, emotionally brutal and honest, and for anyone who has ever had a relationship like Lucy and Gabe’s, reminds you that sometimes that spark, that energy, only happens once in a lifetime. The ending is tragic in all the best ways, and while slightly predictable, pulls at your heart just the same.
I cannot wait to read her next book, THE LOVE WE FOUND!
