Crank by Ellen Hopkins
4.0

Whoa. I just read this in one sitting, after being asked for Ellen Hopkins' books constantly, and I can see why they are so compelling. I now have a much higher standard for verse novels. SLJ says it best: "The poems are masterpieces of word, shape, and pacing, compelling readers on to the next chapter in Kristina's spiraling world. This is a topical page-turner and a stunning portrayal of a teen's loss of direction and realistically uncertain future."

When good girl Kristina tries crank (methamphetamine) on a visit to her absent father, she is instantly hooked and her life spins out of control. The end is unsettling and inconclusive; I've already reserved the sequel.

Mature language and themes.
