This was good.. but I was waiting for it to be great. Don’t get me wrong- I love S.A. Cosby. I love the way he writes, I love that his books are so grounded in reality, I love how much research obviously goes into his writing, and I love his characters. But something about this one didn’t click for me like his other book did. I think I had trouble connecting with the main character, the Sheriff was so wooden at times(which tracked for his character) but that made it hard for me as a reader to sympathize with him. I also found it to be very repetitive at times. One of the major themes of the book is the stronghold of racism in the south, especially in small communities, and while I appreciate that Cosby may not have wanted to leave any room for misinterpretation of that message- it started to feel like that point was being reiterated just for the sake of saying it. By that, I’m not referring to the actions of the characters or any plot points, the narrator just went on the same spiel about being a black sheriff in the south which, after so many examples were given throughout the book, started to feel like overkill.
