Bought this book last year and was surprised when it’s a signed copy from the author and the translator. The cover appealed to me and something about laundry makes me pick this up.
Jieun somehow accidentally caused her family to disappear. She lives numerous lifetimes searching for them. Settling herself in the town of Marigold, she starts Mind Laundry where you can erase painful memories or iron out the creases of your heart. The stains are being transferred to the white T-shirt and turns them into clean shirts and red petals. Then we saw the story of five troubles and wounded souls. While helping them, Jieun discovers something that changes her life.
It has a very interesting concept, where the place washes away the stains and creases of your heart. Though from the very first start, I was confused with Jieun power, how it started, the what and the whys. I have so many questions hoping to find answers and as the story progresses, most things are not clear. With this kind of story, I want details, I want explanations not just implied that readers are supposed to know already the power, where it originates, what makes Jieun special from the rest. And her family, I want to know what happened, where did they go and after so many lifetimes, these things don’t get resolve. It is one of the things, I’m really looking forward but sadly, it was left unanswered until the end.
As with any translated literate, the pacing is slow. Though it has very unique premise and short on life lessons, I’m not sure if it’s the translation or the execution itself, but somehow this didn’t fully work for me. The only thing I like about this aside from the cover, is the atmospheric vibe of Marigold.
