The Sea, the Sea
by Iris Murdoch
dark
emotional
mysterious
reflective
slow-paced
This is my first Iris Murdoch novel and I am enamored. I can see why A.S. Byatt was so drawn to her work. What started out as a slow, pleasant meander into the life of a retired director, quickly turned into an indictment of self delusion and the ways in which reality is obscured by the lens of our own desires.
And while I know Murdoch claimed that she didn't mix her philosophy with her fiction, I think it's well on display here. Absolutely engaging novel.
