xander78 's review for:
Animal Farm
by George Orwell
I haven't read this since high school and rereading it again this year was eye opening. I'm not sure how I managed to forget how violent this book was. I clearly remembered the pigs taking control, but the battles against the human and the manipulation of the farm animals was really atrocious.
At first there is a period where it jars me that animals can talk and do things that man does even though they don't have hands, but it quickly vanishes and the heart of the story emerges. The story of a revolution to remove one tyrannical leader only to end up with another in its place who is even worse is sadly a story that has happened time and time again. I shook my head as I read it on the tram disbelieving the gaul of the pigs for the way that they treated their fellow animals, but mostly because it's so obviously us people who are mistreating our fellow men.
I feel that this book should be read by everyone, to educate them about the dangers of power and the strength of greed and how they can seep into your life slowly. It takes a watchful eye to keep them at bay.
