I'll Pray When I'm Dying by Stephen J. Golds
5.0
Ben Hughes is an OCD corrupt Boston detective struggling to crawl from under a legacy handed down from his London bobby father. Ben's an exposed nerve of a character flailing against the crumbling strands of his comfortable reality.
Golds is one of my favourite writers on the scene just now and his raw, searing poetic style meshes brilliantly with his no-holds-barred noir plotting. This one contains some of his best writing yet and he has a knack for making even tertiary characters memorable without the need to delve into their whole backstory. Case in point would be chapter three where we are introduced to Ben's friends and rivals within the Southie gang he is a part of.
Golds takes us on a journey beyond the heart of darkness and straight to the pit of its stomach in an unforgettable noir spiral.
