If you like female 'detective' series/novels such as Tracy Crosswright or Morgan Dane, check out this one! I especially liked that the FBI agent (detective) was a neurologist and a black woman. Huzzah!

Until logging the book here, I didn't know this was a series and am both delighted and eager for #2.

As an aside, if the 'science' in this novel is actually possible (I can't say what it is without being a spoiler) that is truly terrifying!!

Although the 'wrap up' and who the "bad guy" is left me feeling annoyed and disappointed at times, the rest of the novel was great and I was especially hooked into some of the sub-stories, namely the curious incidents around the death of Altair's fiance some months before.

Overall the book kept me captivated and I was able to connect with most of the characters. It wasn't quite as ensnaring as other female detective series I've read, and I'm not putting this book on any "must read" or "recommendations" list(s) I keep, but if you LIKE this genre, this is a good series to check out. I also had a revolving thought "This author is clever"

SUMMARY: Agent Sayer Altair is assigned to a case involving girls who die in a cage after prolonged torture and captivity. It becomes clear early that the serial killer is doing some Nazi-style experiments and is obsessed with death, mythology, and twins. During the investigation, Altair and a few of her colleagues feel something isn't right and open a huge can of worms, namely, their suspicions call all kinds of evidence into question, opening up closed cases right and left and making the FBI look bad (not to mention the potential reality that they may have several innocents in prison). Altair also learns that her fiance's death wasn't what she had been lead to believe... There's a little bit of political/police corruption/white male privilege going on as well and I like how Altair addresses it and reacts to those situations. She's a strong woman that inspires me.
