The simplicity of the language and the seeming paucity of plot disguise a powerful narrative architecture. It's obvious that there isn't a word out of place; what becomes clear as the voice gathers familiarity is the surety, the universality, of Wood's moral inquiry. When it was finished, I started it over and listened again to the first quarter or so of the book. This clarified the ways certain thoughts and impressions echo and ripple through the narrative, the way the book hums with meaning.
