Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
by April Genevieve Tucholke
This book is about a girl, named Violet, who is nouveau-poor and meets an enchanting young man, called River, when she rents out the guest house of her families decaying estate. As soon as this young man arrives in town bizarre things start to happen. River confesses that he is the causes but his confessions are staggered and interwoven in a complicated web of truths and lies. River and Violet are developing feelings or is that a part of the web of truth and lies? By the end we may need River to save the day from an even bigger devil than him.
The book has been described as gothic romance, chilling and disturbing. I did not find it to be any of those things except maybe a gothic romance. It was just really lite on the romance part so I hesitate to say that. It is very much a YA novel. The writing style is definitely geared towards a younger age range. That doesn’t bother me personally though. I found the story to by highly original. I don’t think I’ve read a story like this before so that ranks high for me. I think this story can be very relatable as well for the intended audience because I think it will be easy for the reader to put themselves in the character’s shoes and think, “what would I do?” Plot wise I think it may be lacking just a smidge. It didn’t seem to have much of a direction and felt like it was just floating along as it went.
Overall I do recommend the book. It was an enjoyable read and I found my self speeding through it because I wanted to know what would happen next.
