The first half of the book was excellent. The writing made me feel viscerally uncomfortable in places. Given the topic I was bracing myself for the abuser to be either physically or sexually abusive and while there are elements of that it's somehow even more jarring to read about him not only recognising Annie' humanity but also manipulating her based on that.
The second half of the book seemed to drag just a little bit but it was still a good read. I spent most of it being anxious thatDoug was being given a redemption arc but thankfully the ending was still satisfying.
Despite the last half of the book feeling a bit too slow paced, the ending was still somehow rushed. The book is also very dialogue heavy which I don't tend to like, however, I thought in this instance it was very well done.
Overall a good book, however I would not recommend it to anyone with a history of abuse as the writing ensures you feel the impact of Doug's words and actions to some extent.
