The Wrath of Mulgarath by Holly Black, Tony DiTerlizzi

5.0

Not only is this book the perfect conclusion to the series, it also exemplifies the sort of modern fantasy that makes these books so memorable. The castle in the junkyard, the dragons drinking milk; everything was super well done with super great imagery, not to mention an unnerving edge.

It also feels, despite the obvious fantasy narrative, really grounded and real in ways. When the kids realize their mom is gone and, even though in the past she yelled at them and grounded them, they would do anything to get her back... when Jared admits that he really doesn’t want to die but he would rather that than see his siblings and mom get hurt... the whole thing with their dad and Jared having to realize he really was sort of a shitty person and didn’t care about them.. maybe I just come
from a family of three siblings n split up parents but all that resonated so hard. Great finish for the series.
