The Veil
by Rachel Harrison
This was an enjoyable listen. Short and to the point with an interesting setting.
However, I felt like this was almost too to the point. The meaning or message in this is super blatant… it’s a good message, and it was kind of fun to see it played out in this very stark matter. But if you’re looking for subtlety or meaning that’s expertly, subtly woven into the narrative, this really isn’t that.
I also wanted to learn more about the setting! Or live in it a little more. I’d love an entire book dedicated to a woman waking up in a kind of shadowy purgatory with the different characters that inhabit it. Alas, with the short nature of this, we don’t really get it. It still felt real, I just wanted more.
Overall, a fun quick listen if you like ghosts and old-timey things and messages of empowerment for women. Just go in expecting a short, to the point short story vs an intricate novella or the like.
