Kill the Farm Boy by Kevin Hearne, Delilah S. Dawson
2.0

Kill the Farm Boy is a book I think I’d have loved, if you had given it to me when I was fourteen but at thirty three it falls flat. The book had its good points, hence two stars rather than one but a book like this lives and dies on its humor and it was exceedingly rare that I found anything funny even rarer that I found it funny the third fourth fifth or sixth times they made the same joke.
The book is not without its good points, it subverts genre tropes in interesting ways, the characters are shallow but not as shallow as they appear at first glance and the world they travel is reminiscent of classic adventure fantasy but for me at least that’s where the good things stop. Juvenile humor and weak puns abound and as I said earlier repetition is the name of the game, which is bad enough on the rare occasion I found something funny, it is absolutely painful when I didn’t find it funny the first time.
A Good example of this is several chapters where the joke is that the Elven village is called Morning Wood. With a setup like that, I’m willing to bet that most of you can guess 80 to 90% of the jokes made, if not, great you have several and I emphasize several chapters to catch up with the rest of us. Honestly I wanted to like Kill the Farm Boy, I’ve been looking forward to it for a couple of months now and I am admittedly a big fan of both Kevin Hearne and Delilah S. Dawson but I just didn’t, I wouldn’t mind seeing the two collaborate again on something perhaps but for this series at least, I’m out.
