Follett writes brilliant historical fiction. I've never had to worry about a stray anachronism jolting me out of reading.
This is the pre-qual to his Kingsbridge series. The book focuses on a handful of characters spanning the class system of Anglo-Saxon England starting at the end of the 10th century. The book ihas exceptional prose and the casual reader learns about early medieval England without feeling like it's a lesson.
Follett writes his characters with stark honesty. You'll really love some and hate others. The narrator is excellent!
