The Child of Pleasure by Gabriele D'Annunzio

1.0

"Where now were all his vanities and cruelties, his schemes and his duplicities? What had become of all his loves and his illusions, his disappointments and his disgusts, and the implacable reaction after pleasure?"

Ugh, what an awful story. I kept trying to figure out why I was reading it, what the message ones - why I would be reading it so long after it was written and why it would be one of the 1001 books to read before you die....

And...I just have nothing. Maybe it's because it's an interesting representation of the people, activities and dress of the times? I don't know....

all I know is the main character is awful. He's self absorbed and childish. He seems to have decided if can't have what he wants, then he will destroy everything within his power to destroy - namely through lovers and adultery.

and the part with the sensual books with the husband. that was just weird.

anyway, I'm glad others enjoyed this. It just wasn't for me.
