The Kitchen by Ollie Masters

This was a mostly entertaining mafia stories set in the 1970s which give it style but not a lot of substance. The gimmick is interesting in that the leads are gangsters and women (what a radical concept - which has never been done before! Note my sarcasm!) but the story is pretty conventional. The book is actually too short too really invest in any of the characters.

I liked the art but none of the characters felt real - having three leads was probably a mistake as it split the focus too much. And despite the tagline this doesn't really explore the gender dynamics of women running a mafia operations. It gets a mention in the beginning but it doesn't really matter. It's a gimmick more than anything.

On the plus side I liked the style and the character design. Having women leads allow for much more fun fashion on the page. Yes I am being superficial but I take victories where I can get them. An enjoyable read which could have been benefit from a longer length and some innovation in the plot.
