Villette by Charlotte Brontë

5.0

I doubt I could add anything that hasn't already been said about Charlotte Brontë or about the beauty and poetry of this book, or about what a great heroine Lucy Snow is. But I can add that I loved it.

And I'm glad I didn't read it in school so I could enjoy the simple reading of it without the responsibility of a literary dissection and analysis. Though, admittedly, I'd love to re-read it and do just a little dissection and analysis.

One thing about the audiobook: it's wonderful and I loved the experience of listening to Davina Porter read Brontë's story, but if you don't have a hard copy text with translated French, and if you don't know French, you'll miss about 1/10 of the text. My six years of high school and college French got a workout, but I know that I still missed some bits -- nothing dire, but I'd have liked to get every single word. I'm sure that if you have a hard copy, all of the French dialogue is translated.

"Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage." I don't think I'll ever forget this line.
