All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir

3.0

I don’t get the hype for All My Rage. It couldn’t really decide what it wanted to be - was it about the American Dream, grief, culture, substance abuse, family, trauma, or physical abuse? All of those subjects were dabbled in, but it was never clear to me what the true meaning was. At the end of the day, this book read like a random assortment of topics piled on top of each other. To be fair, there was some good meaning, but it was conveyed chaotically.
The high school stereotypes also made me cringe a lot. Nearly teenager portrayed was an opioid addict, a cigarette smoker, or a drug dealer. It’s very clear to me that the author attended high school in the 1990s and early 2000s, because a) there are a couple druggies now, but they’re hugely a minority, and b) everybody vapes - there is no smoking anymore. The addition of teen moms was weird too, because they’re exceedingly rare in high school. I also hated that literally all the white characters are raging racists. That trope is aggravating.
