The Forest of Hands and Teeth
by Carrie Ryan
The Forest of Hands and Teeth is well-written at times and stumbling at other times. The premise is terrifying: Mary and her entire village have been told their whole lives that they are the last pocket of survivors in the middle of the Forest of Hands and Teeth, aptly named for the zombies (unconsecrated) that surround them at all times. As survivors, they must ignore the constant moan of the unconsecrated and live their lives. It falls to Mary and the three others in her age group to get married and continue the generations living in the village. Of course, our protagonist questions everything, otherwise this would be a very boring book. Mary realizes that everything isn't what it seems and one day she cannot ignore what she knows any longer.
Overall, this was a good read. There were times that I got really annoyed at Mary because she fluctuated between being strong and being weak. I found I would get really mad when she would just give up for something minor after surviving for so long. The Forest of Hands and Teeth is a bit of horror, drama, and romance thrown together in a dystopic world.
