Hungry Hearts: 13 Tales of Food & Love by Elsie Chapman
4.5
I loved, loved this collection of short stories! Yes, the writing varies from story to story -- not only in quality of writing, but also in tone and even genre. I've not read many short story collections, but I was surprised when some stories in this collection were fantasy or magical realism or horror, all interspersed with general fiction. All of the stories take place along one street in a small town. The characters often show up in multiple stories, yet each story focuses on one restaurant on Hungry Hearts Row. I really enjoyed the connecting threads trailing through the stories.
I listened to this on audio, which was great for hearing the pronunciation of various cultural elements. However, I think a hard copy would be great for those (like me) interested in learning more about the various dishes and foods mentioned.
