On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

4.0

I really enjoyed the poetic nature of this book. It reminded me of Call Me by Your Name's depiction of self-discovery in relation to sexuality and love. Writing it as a "letter to my mother" piece felt a little misguided, and without that lens, I found myself enjoying the journey much more. I read many reviews calling Vuong's writing pretentious and unworthy of the unrelenting praise it's received, but like Rupi Kaur's work, just because it appeals to more people, doesn't mean its less-than.
