Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier

5.0

Have you ever felt the need to rum away from your life and totally reinvent yourself?

Jennifer Hillier solidified herself as an auto buy author got me a long time ago and this one was no different.

Starting off with a dead celebrity in his bathtub filled with blood and his much younger wife, Paris being arrested for his possible murder had me hooked from the start.

While being held to be brought to charges, Paris is nervous that someone from the life she ran away from will come forward and destroy the new life she built. I kept asking myself, “What could she have possibly ran away from?” The thrill of trying to figure it out kept me at the edge of my seat.

The story is broken up in 6 parts. In one of the next parts we get Drew Malcolm, journalist turned podcaster who discusses true crime cases. Hes getting ready to do a season dedicated to “The Ice Queen” Ruby Reyes who is back in the headlines for her pending release from prison after her murder conviction. Drew has a connection with Ruby’s case because he was best friends with Ruby’s daughter, Joey.

Now, we have Joey. We learn her gut wrenching childhood with her abusive mother, both physically and emotionally. Her story is truly heartbreaking. You know those kids who don’t even stand a chance in life from the moment they are born because of their parents? Thats Joey’s story. Joey has a tragic end to her story when she died in a house fire at age 20. Her life truly made me cry.

Come back today, now that Ruby is getting out, she’s blackmailing Paris. How could these 2 women be connected if Ruby has been locked up for 25 years? What could Ruby possibly have on Paris to blackmail her? And is this what Paris is running away from ?

What a page turner the final parts came to be! The storytelling and connecting factors are so well laid out to be gripping and intriguing that it kept me trying to connect the dots, but when it came out, it took a turn i didn’t see coming. Truly mind blown. I was not expecting the connection between Joey, Paris, Ruby and Drew and to say the twists kept coming and coming would be an understatement.

The entire book, while parts were heartbreaking, it was gripping and compelling in the best ways. What a captivating thriller by an outstanding author. Jennifer Hillier sure knows how to write great page turning thrillers.
