The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice

3.0

A controversial Anne Rice erotica trilogy? Consider me intrigued.

This one finally freed up from my library—I’ve barely started but will come back and leave a review once I’m finished.

Following her huge success with The Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire series), Rice felt compelled to write a BDSM erotica series set in a fantasy world. As the title reads, this is a twist on the Sleeping Beauty story we all know. Rice assumed the pen name Roquelaure for this Beauty trilogy to avoid any backlash she would receive in writing these books back in the 80s.

She does preface the book (dated June 2012) with her stance on feminism and the right to sexual freedom and power, which I appreciate.

Since it’s original publication, the series garnered a cult following, but naturally, with this kind of subject matter, it’s often deemed as controversial and purely pornographic—it has been banned off and on in different places.

These books, by no means, are for everyone. Many people will not be able to look past the submissive Princess piece to dig more into the emotional/psychological aspect—and that’s okay. This wasn’t written for them.

Stay tuned for my final thoughts on how book one goes!
