Watercolour with Love: 50 Favourite Motifs to Paint in 5 Easy Steps by Lena Yokota-Barth

5.0

Lovely, especially for a confident beginner.

I wish the artist had not been limited to "5 easy steps". Step one being 'draw a flamingo' is not an easy step! I get that "5 easy steps" is good marketing but allowing more complexity (e.g. a strawberry being done in three steps but a garland of flowers taking 12 steps, rather than everything being forced into the '5 step' format) would have produced a better book.

I would also have loved to see some pictures where the artist had combined multiple motifs to make larger images. Something to aspire to!

Each image has the five aforementioned steps. For most images, the first step is a drawing, the second, third and fourth steps are layers of paint, and the fifth step is the finishing touches. Below the final image is a short paragraph giving useful tips and information, I relied heavily on the text.

Despite my complaints about the format, the book is just too cute to rate lower. So far, I have painted four of the cactus, a llama, a flamingo, a "swiss cheese" leaf, three of the ice creams, and some flowers. The book has given me the confidence to do these, which I just wouldn't have otherwise had.

ETA: Bumped to five stars. Above complaints still stand but I'm still using some of the techniques I learnt from this book.
