I really enjoyed Can't Spell Treason Without Tea, so I was excited to jump into A Pirate's Life for Tea. Pirates? Friends-to-Enemies-to-Lovers? More lesbians? More puns? What more could I want!
Just like in the first book, I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Kianthe and Reyna. Their relationship does my heart good. I love that the main conflicts in this book series do not directly stem from their relationship or how they interact with each other. They feel like a healthy, real couple, and that is part of what makes this series most enjoyable. I love the puns, I love the silliness, I love how understanding they are of each other, and I love how protective they are of one another.
I liked that part of the unresolved plot from the first book (the dragon eggs) continued as well as new plotlines being introduced. I think this is something Rebecca Thorne does well at. Enough loose ends are tied to be satisfying, but there are still some threads leading the reader into the next book.
I do struggle with considering this iteration a cozy fantasy. The relationship between Kianthe and Reyna is definitely cozy and feel-good, but there was so much action (and adventure) in A Pirate's Life for Tea that it felt more like a general fantasy book. Perhaps more on the light-hearted side as it's not a particularly heavy book. Either way, I didn't go into this book expecting a cozy fantasy, so I'm not disappointed and this series is a much easier read than a lot of the other fantasy books on my shelf.
My one final wish is that I wanted to see more of Bobbie and Serina's POVs! I loved that we had their POVs, but I really liked their characters and I would have liked to have been in their heads more. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the series (and I already have it pre-ordered).
Finally, I would like to personally thank Rebecca Thorne for including the bonus (spicy) one-shot "The Game" at the end. I have been fed. Thank you. You really came in clutch with that. I think my soul left my body.
Additional book details below, if you're into that.
