This was described as a villain origin story, and boy did it deliver on that front. Anela was an interesting main character to get behind, and my girl was justified in the decisions she made for sure. I found all of the characters interesting and compelling, and there is certainly no clear hero in this story. In terms of storyline and pacing, I enjoyed the first half of this book more than the second half because the character and world building was so interesting. The pacing at the end felt like we were racing to the finish, but nonetheless, I enjoyed. The tension and darkness worked well together.
